IFC Chapter Reports!

TAU KAPPA EPSILON

Hey Everyone this is the Kappa Delta Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon here on campus.
In mid March we sold tickets for our first annual PEA A TKE! Just two dollars and you get to throw a big ol' handful of creamy sweet peas and chuck ‘em in the face of the brother of your choice! Come out next time and PEA A TKE!
We are also organizing a guest speaker to come and talk about a very rare and serious disease known as Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP for short). It is a very rare disease that gives people ultra-adverse affects to ultraviolet light, ie. sunlight. The guest speaker is a real-life survivor of this disease and is coming to educate the students of ODU on this disease in order to help raise funds and awareness for a foundation known as XPKids, either later this semester, or at the beginning of next. More information to come. Please come out and show your support!

LAMBDA CHI APLHA

Lambda Chi is very busy this semester with many philanthropic and brotherhood events. We pinned 14 new members who are actively learning our history and values. For philanthropy this semester we have chosen three main groups to help: Relay for Life, St. Jude's Children's Hospital, and The Ronald McDonald House. Also, monthly we clean up the area surrounding Rodgers Hall dorm. We have several scheduled events to promote and support brotherhood including a brotherhood camping trip and golf tournament.

PHI KAPPA TAU

March 2010 was an exciting month for Phi Kappa Tau. On Founders Day, March 17th, we celebrated 104 years since our beginnings as the Non-Fraternity Association at Miami University of Ohio. As always, we drew in both recently graduated alumni along with older alumni from the original 1967 ODU chapter to our Founders Day Dinner, which was held Sunday March 21st. This year, the brothers are particularly excited about Founders Day because, according to rumors circulated by chapter adviser Dan Dauer, the chapter was awaiting the long-awaited return of a very old friend---Butch the Buzzard. Butch--an actual stuffed buzzard--served as the mascot of our chapter when we were originally on campus in the 1960s-1970s. Since the re-chartering of the chapter in November 2007 and the dedication of the new on-campus chapter room in August 2009, there has been talk of acquiring a "Butch II," and now it seems that, as we celebrate the birth of Phi Tau, our chapter has been reunited with its long-lost mascot.

SIGMA NU

Over the past month, the Eta Chi chapter of Sigma Nu here at Old Dominion has been very active in everything from community service to participating with excellence in intramural sports. Our basketball team made it the semifinals of the Greek League tournament before losing a very close, intense game to Theta Chi A by 8 points. We also have fielded a handball team and are currently participating in the regular intramural league with normal students.
We also have organized a social this semester already with Delta Zeta, we gathered at the Recreation Center and had volleyball and basketball orientated activities for three hours. Input from both organizations has shown that it was a very well organized and fun filled event. We have also planned two other significant other socials with Alpha Xi Delta and Zeta Tau Alpha such as a Beach day retreat at Virginia Beach.
As an IFC fraternity, we have also participated in no less than three community service projects so far this semester, including the fact that we now manage an adopt-a-spot for parking lot of Village Building 6. We have done a campus cleanup from 42nd street to 49th street from Hampton Road to Whitehurst Hall, and had a number of brothers represent our chapter by volunteering to run the previous United Services Blood Drive in the Perry Library.
We have also pinned five very fine candidates wishing to become a part of our brotherhood, including very prominent figures off campus such as Frankie Kirmakawsi, the Speaker of the Senate for the Student Government Association; and are educating them in Sigma Nu law as they work toward their goal of initiation.

PI KAPPA ALPHA

In April the Pikes of ODU plan to have a brother/alumni camping trip to further strengthen the bonds between actives and alumni. In addition we are having several socials with sororities, and plan to have a successful time during Greek Week while teamed up with Delta Zeta, Omega Psi Phi, and Sigma Gamma Rho.

SIGMA PI

The Theta-Eta Chapter of Sigma Pi Fraternity International has been extremely busy since coming off academic suspension in January. The Chapter had a semester grade point average that was above the Greek Man’s average and above the campus average. In January, Nick Montana attended the annual Mid-Year Leadership Conference in St. Louis, MO. At the same conference, Brian Kurisky, our Chapter Director, presented on various topics to aid Chapter officers in their positions. On February 28, 2010, the Chapter held its annual Orchid Ball at the Ramada on the Beach. We were pleased to have many Theta-Eta Alumni but also Alumni from other Chapters in attendance. Everyone who attended had a great time throughout the evening. The Chapter placed second overall in 2010 Greek week along with Zeta Tau Alpha, Theta Chi and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. Matthew Cruder won the Greek God competition and the Chapter placed in the Hop Off and the Tug-‘O-War. The Chapter is planning for our annual fire fighter day on April 17. We hope that all Alumni and friends will stop by Station 7 (1211 West 43rd Street – beside ODU) to help us recognize these brave men and women who protect us day in and out. Recently our Chapter Director was recognized with the Donald K. Marchaund Outstanding Alumni Award for his work over the last semester with the Chapter. In May, the Chapter will initiated our new members into the Fraternity. We hope that any Alumni in the area will be able to attend. Please ask a Brother for more information. Finally, the Chapter is gearing up for the summer. Members will be attending the Sigma Pi Convention outside of Boston in July, where they are hoping to win awards for their community service, improvement of the Chapter, and Alumni relations.

Interfraternity Council

Hey everyone! We hope everyone had a pleasant and relaxing spring break!
Take some time to catch up on how things have been going for IFC as well as what is coming in the near future!

The ODU After Dark: Mardi Gras event last month was largely successful, there were over 450 students in attendance! The Skylark Band performed exceptionally eliciting some students to even break out in dance! Students lined up throughout the North Mall of Webb Center to get their photos taken for the photo snow globes and laser dog tags! This was a largely successful event for the Interfraternity Council and we appreciate all of the support from our individual chapters as well as the other councils!

Some color has been added to the walls of the Greek Office in the U-Center with the addition of IFC chapter and PHC chapter painted Greek letters! Each chapter painted their own set of wooden letters and they are attached to the walls of our office representing the 9 IFC chapters and 5 PHC chapters! MGC and NPHC letters soon to come! Come by and see them in Webb U-Center room 1061!

The all-Greek hockey game was at the Norfolk Scope Friday March 19th! It was great unity event for everyone to come out and show support! Thanks to everyone who stuck around for the all-Greek picture on the ice after the game!

There will be a Writing Seminar on April 8th at 7:00 in MGB 102 focused on writing for exams and how to prevent plagiarism.

There will also be a resume building workshop on April 7th at 7 in BAL 1012

Individual chapter reports are on the way!

MGC

Multicultural Greek Council

In 2007 the Multicultural Greek Council was started at Old Dominion University. This Greek Council was created to support the Multicultural Fraternities/Sororities that were on campus, and future Multicultural organizations that were to come.

Sigma Lambda Upsilon, Senoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Incorporated, Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority, Incorporated, and La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Incorporated founded the MGC. Together these three organizations worked together to form a well organized, structured Greek Council.

Since 2008 the council is being operated by two organizations due to the absence of Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority, Incorporated on the ODU campus. For the three years that MGC has been around many events have been planned and executed successfully. Some of these events include Socials with other Greek Council’s, Canned Food Drives, Fundraisers for Diabetes, Volunteering with Children, and social gatherings for students.

Even though this council only supports two Multicultural Greek Organizations, MGC hopes to expand on Old Dominion University’s Campus, in hopes to also support future Greeks as well.

What's going on with PHC?

Our 5 PHC chapters have been working hard with their academics, philanthropy events, recruitment and making their mark on our campus. Here's a little bit about what we've been up to in 2010!

ALPHA PHI

The Epsilon Eta Chapter of Alpha Phi has been extremely busy this month. We started out with our informal spring recruitment, and gave bids to 9 beautiful women. We participated in heart health with the health center and held a red dress fashion show during activity hour. This year is Alpha Phi’s 40th anniversary at Old Dominion University. We celebrated our anniversary on Saturday February 6, by holding a Red Dress Gala for current sisters and Alpha Phi alumni. The Gala was a huge success. We raised over 2,000 dollars and over 45 alumni came representing pledge classes all the way up to fall 1999. The following day we pinned our new members. On February 10, we had a sisterhood event where sisters made Valentine’s for each other. Alpha Phi will continue to stay busy this month. We are preparing for Cardiac Care week leading up to our big Philanthropy event on February 18, Cardiac Arrest.

Alpha Xi Delta

Two semesters ago Alpha Xi Delta adopted a new philanthropy called, Autism Speaks. Since then we have been raising money for the organization and in addition to that participating in Autism Speaks Walks. Those walks took place in Richmond and in D.C. last fall. This semester we are cooking meals two times a month at the Ronald McDonald house, which we have enjoyed doing for several years. We also have a Sisterhood Activity once a month and we have our Sisterhood Retreat on February 27th. This spring we are also focusing even more attention to Autism Speaks with our AmaXIng Challenge Week. This week of events will take place April 19th - April 23rd. During this week we will have events on campus such as, a 5k walk/run, karaoke contest, flag football competition, scavenger hunt and a puzzle palooza contest. We are extremely excited to have events where the entire campus and community surrounding the campus can get involved and raise money for our philanthropy, Autism Speaks.

Delta Zeta

Delta Zeta had many exciting events going on in January. We had our ELC come visit us and she had many good ideas for everyone in our chapter especially those with executive and chair positions. We participated in a “study with the Greeks” study session that supports Greek unity and good academics. January was also Stalking Awareness month, and Delta Zeta attended a “Stalking Survivors” lecture where past and present Old Dominion students shared their personal stories about stalking and how to protect yourself. Our main focus in January was our Spring Recruitment for new girls to add to our sisterhood. We had events every day during the last week of the month and ended up pinning nine new girls. January was a very successful month for Delta Zeta and we look forward to getting to know our new sisters.

In February, Delta Zeta will be focusing more on unity within the chapter while we are getting to know our new sisters. We are participating in several events with SAC such as movie night and novelty baskets. We are having a sisterhood event and making cupcakes the day before Valentine’s Day with an “anti-love” theme. We will also be going to another “Study with the Greeks”. We will be doing an event at ODU After Dark sponsored by PHC. The following week, we will be having progressive dinners with our new members. Each pledge class will be bringing different foods such as appetizers and desserts. We look forward to even more time with our new sisters.

Pi Beta Phi

This past January, we celebrated our chapter loyalty day in the North Cafe. We invited the Greek community to celebrate with
us by hosting a huge cookie shine in the Newport News room. We also showed a slide show to those who attended and had a great time! January was a very special month for us because we initiated 17 new girls after they have worked so hard and have turned out to be really great sisters. We elected our new officers for 2010 and are really excited see how they serve Virginia Delta. In February, we are getting ready to host our 45th Reunion for Virginia Delta at ODU. We have invited about 600 alumni and have activities planned all weekend such as a campus tour, lunch, and arrow stitching. The new officers are getting together to go over the calendar and add events where necessary, so there may be more to come!

Zeta Tau Alpha

Our main event in January was a retreat that we had on the weekend of the sixteenth. Our chapter met in Webb on the majority of the day Saturday and then again on Sunday with our province president. We enjoyed spending that time together and that retreat made our chapter grow closer and stronger. We also had a 2 co-sponsorships that we attended for stalker awareness month. We had two sisterhood events in January. The first we all got together and watched the popular show The Jersey Shore. We met at one of our favorite restaurants, La Herradura for dinner one night as our other event. January also started out intramural basketball season, where we are ranked # 2. We also did our first Adopt-A-Street in January, where we clean up the trash on 43rd street to keep our community clean.

One of our most important philanthropy events is Hoops for the Cure which is February 21st. Breast-cancer survivors come to celebrate their fight against breast cancer and to help raise awareness. We volunteer and hand out t-shirts, pom-poms, and other spirit items to show them we care. The basketball game is a “pink-out” and even the nets on the court are pink. We have a sisterhood event February 9th where we are going to be making and decorating cupcakes for Valentine’s Day. We will also have a sisterhood event to make tie-dye shirts for the Hoops for the Cure game. Our annual Crush party was February 6th. Each sister drew another sisters’ name and had to find them a date. The dates were kept secret until the dance when we walked in and our dates found us. This year is was at Baxter’s on Granby St. and we all had a wonderful time. On February 20th we are having an alumnae social at Color Me Mine where we will go and paint pottery together with our alumnae.
