IFC Chapter Reports!

TAU KAPPA EPSILON

Hey Everyone this is the Kappa Delta Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon here on campus.
In mid March we sold tickets for our first annual PEA A TKE! Just two dollars and you get to throw a big ol' handful of creamy sweet peas and chuck ‘em in the face of the brother of your choice! Come out next time and PEA A TKE!
We are also organizing a guest speaker to come and talk about a very rare and serious disease known as Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP for short). It is a very rare disease that gives people ultra-adverse affects to ultraviolet light, ie. sunlight. The guest speaker is a real-life survivor of this disease and is coming to educate the students of ODU on this disease in order to help raise funds and awareness for a foundation known as XPKids, either later this semester, or at the beginning of next. More information to come. Please come out and show your support!

LAMBDA CHI APLHA

Lambda Chi is very busy this semester with many philanthropic and brotherhood events. We pinned 14 new members who are actively learning our history and values. For philanthropy this semester we have chosen three main groups to help: Relay for Life, St. Jude's Children's Hospital, and The Ronald McDonald House. Also, monthly we clean up the area surrounding Rodgers Hall dorm. We have several scheduled events to promote and support brotherhood including a brotherhood camping trip and golf tournament.

PHI KAPPA TAU

March 2010 was an exciting month for Phi Kappa Tau. On Founders Day, March 17th, we celebrated 104 years since our beginnings as the Non-Fraternity Association at Miami University of Ohio. As always, we drew in both recently graduated alumni along with older alumni from the original 1967 ODU chapter to our Founders Day Dinner, which was held Sunday March 21st. This year, the brothers are particularly excited about Founders Day because, according to rumors circulated by chapter adviser Dan Dauer, the chapter was awaiting the long-awaited return of a very old friend---Butch the Buzzard. Butch--an actual stuffed buzzard--served as the mascot of our chapter when we were originally on campus in the 1960s-1970s. Since the re-chartering of the chapter in November 2007 and the dedication of the new on-campus chapter room in August 2009, there has been talk of acquiring a "Butch II," and now it seems that, as we celebrate the birth of Phi Tau, our chapter has been reunited with its long-lost mascot.

SIGMA NU

Over the past month, the Eta Chi chapter of Sigma Nu here at Old Dominion has been very active in everything from community service to participating with excellence in intramural sports. Our basketball team made it the semifinals of the Greek League tournament before losing a very close, intense game to Theta Chi A by 8 points. We also have fielded a handball team and are currently participating in the regular intramural league with normal students.
We also have organized a social this semester already with Delta Zeta, we gathered at the Recreation Center and had volleyball and basketball orientated activities for three hours. Input from both organizations has shown that it was a very well organized and fun filled event. We have also planned two other significant other socials with Alpha Xi Delta and Zeta Tau Alpha such as a Beach day retreat at Virginia Beach.
As an IFC fraternity, we have also participated in no less than three community service projects so far this semester, including the fact that we now manage an adopt-a-spot for parking lot of Village Building 6. We have done a campus cleanup from 42nd street to 49th street from Hampton Road to Whitehurst Hall, and had a number of brothers represent our chapter by volunteering to run the previous United Services Blood Drive in the Perry Library.
We have also pinned five very fine candidates wishing to become a part of our brotherhood, including very prominent figures off campus such as Frankie Kirmakawsi, the Speaker of the Senate for the Student Government Association; and are educating them in Sigma Nu law as they work toward their goal of initiation.

PI KAPPA ALPHA

In April the Pikes of ODU plan to have a brother/alumni camping trip to further strengthen the bonds between actives and alumni. In addition we are having several socials with sororities, and plan to have a successful time during Greek Week while teamed up with Delta Zeta, Omega Psi Phi, and Sigma Gamma Rho.

SIGMA PI

The Theta-Eta Chapter of Sigma Pi Fraternity International has been extremely busy since coming off academic suspension in January. The Chapter had a semester grade point average that was above the Greek Man’s average and above the campus average. In January, Nick Montana attended the annual Mid-Year Leadership Conference in St. Louis, MO. At the same conference, Brian Kurisky, our Chapter Director, presented on various topics to aid Chapter officers in their positions. On February 28, 2010, the Chapter held its annual Orchid Ball at the Ramada on the Beach. We were pleased to have many Theta-Eta Alumni but also Alumni from other Chapters in attendance. Everyone who attended had a great time throughout the evening. The Chapter placed second overall in 2010 Greek week along with Zeta Tau Alpha, Theta Chi and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. Matthew Cruder won the Greek God competition and the Chapter placed in the Hop Off and the Tug-‘O-War. The Chapter is planning for our annual fire fighter day on April 17. We hope that all Alumni and friends will stop by Station 7 (1211 West 43rd Street – beside ODU) to help us recognize these brave men and women who protect us day in and out. Recently our Chapter Director was recognized with the Donald K. Marchaund Outstanding Alumni Award for his work over the last semester with the Chapter. In May, the Chapter will initiated our new members into the Fraternity. We hope that any Alumni in the area will be able to attend. Please ask a Brother for more information. Finally, the Chapter is gearing up for the summer. Members will be attending the Sigma Pi Convention outside of Boston in July, where they are hoping to win awards for their community service, improvement of the Chapter, and Alumni relations.
